What does an on-call clause mean in a travel contract?

Short answer

An on-call clause says when you must be ready to come into the hospital outside your normal shifts, how fast you must get there, and what you get paid for it.

What it usually covers

How often you are on call — for example, a set number of shifts a week or a rotating schedule.

Your response time — how many minutes you have to arrive after you get the call. This can decide where you are able to live.

Your pay — an hourly standby rate, plus a callback rate once you are working.

Words that should make you slow down

'Call as needed' or 'per unit needs' — this means there is no limit written down.

'Per hospital policy' with no number — ask for the policy in writing.

No mention of call at all on an OR contract — ask. OR jobs often include call, and you want it written before you start, not after.

Ask your recruiter before you sign

  • Can you write the exact number of call shifts into my contract?
  • What is my response time once I'm called?
  • What are the standby and callback rates?
  • Can call be added later, and does that need my OK?
